It’s officially University of Memphis basketball time! I could not be more excited. As much as I wanted a better season for our football, Memphis is truly a basketball town. Last night, I, along with Elizabeth and 20,000 other Memphis Tiger bball fans trekked down to the FedEx Forum for Memphis Madness.
After getting to the arena at 5:30pm for a 6:30pm door opening, I stumbled upon this scene:
This is the street IN FRONT of the Forum. Hundreds and hundreds of fans! I had heard that at 3:30pm people were standing around just to get a seat. See, it was free. FREEEEEE. I stood around with friends listening to a bad band, cheered at TV cameras when they panned the crowd, and then we began moving. Elizabeth and I got to the club level-which is one level up from the courtside. Not bad. The U of M cheerleaders and pom squad performed, the Lady Tigers were announced and did a quick scrimmage(they look great!), and then, the arena got dark.
Memphis rapper Yo Gotti performed(which I missed thanks to the freaking long concession stand line).
The bottom image is the team being announced. Might I had–sweet moves, Drew Barham, sweet moves. The team got announced, Coach Josh Pastner thanked the crowd, and the slam dunk contest got underway. Guest judges Brandon Jennings, Tiger Cedric Henderson, Yo Gotti(who needs instruction on how to hold number signs when judging..love you!), Tiger Chris Douglas-Roberts(COME HOME!), and a childhood favorite-Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway. It was magic to see him back on the court. The evening wrapped up with us seeing the team play.
No night would be complete without a trip to YoLo! I am hoping to catch the Tigers play this season. Tiger fans are the best and most loyal anywhere-it’s something our entire city needs.
